3 News sports presenter and reporter Michelle Pickles is taking on a challenge of a lifetime, to race up 1100 stairs while wearing a full fire fighters kit weighing up to 25kg in the Firefighters Sky Tower Challenge. She’s doing it for charity, to raise money and awareness for the Leukaemia & Blood Cancer Foundation. Follow her training as she prepares for the big day.

So only a week and a half to go before I climb the Sky Tower. In full firefighters kit.

I’m still climbing with 10 kilograms in my backpack – thank goodness for big bags of rice!

And today I also trained in a Firefighters uniform for the first time. Overalls and a jacket. You wouldn’t think that would make much of a difference – but man was it hot inside that uniform. I have even more respect for those amazing Firefighters now!

Once again the lovely Hilary Barry trained with me – only this time we brought along 3 News cameraman Phil Johnson – so we could show you what a training session looks like. It’s not pretty. But it is for a great cause – the Leukaemia & Blood Cancer Foundation. Every step we make is for people all over NZ who are affected by these terrible diseases.

Just so you know we climb the Vero Building which isn’t quite as high as the Sky Tower. So we climb from level 6 (reception) to level 40. Then we go back down to level 6 and climb up to level 22 (which is where Bell Gully reception is and where I return the access card they so kindly lend me every time we train).

Enjoy the video!

Here is my fundraising page if you’d like to make a donation to my climb.
