The early pressure came from the USA as they did battle against Japan in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Germany – Japan winning on penalties after it was 2-2 (1-3) at the end of added time.
It was the USA who also managed to score first, albeit well into the second half after plenty of chances prior.
Alex Morgan, a substitute at halftime, struck the ball perfectly past the Japanese keeper in the 68 minute.
Aya Miyama equalised in the 80th minute for Japan in a goalmouth scramble.
Then it was captain Abby Wambach who grabbed the lead back for the USA with a 100th minute header to take it to 2-1 but Japan struck with just minutes left in extra time.
