Angelique Kerber has won the US Open title with a 6-3 4-6 6-4 victory over Karolina Pliskova in the final.

Kerber, 28, adds the US Open to her victory at the Australian Open in January.

The German, who also reached the Wimbledon final in July, has dethroned Serena Williams for the women's number one ranking, ending her streak of 186 weeks at the top.

Pliskova couldn't have made a worst start to the match as she lobbed an open volley long, before breaking a string on a forehand as her serve was broken in the first game.

Kerber didn't need a second invitation as she locked up the first set with unrelenting pressure as Pliskova was forced to be creative in her shot-making.

However, Pliskova found plenty of joy at the net in the second, mixing up her game to keep Kerber guessing with advances to the tape.

The world number 11 would get her second set break when she enticed Kerber into coming to the net, before delicately floating a lob over her and punching the air in jubilation.

Serving for the set, Pliskova held her nerve to win three straight points and force the US Open final into a decider.

Kerber, who looked a shadow of herself in the second set, bounced back in fashion and overcame a break to win the deciding set.
