An unprecedented eight-minute hat-trick from striker Andy Carroll has earned West Ham a draw that effectively ends Arsenal's title tilt.

The Gunners' German playmaker Mesut Ozil had opened the scoring at Upton Park, before Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez doubled their lead in the 35th minute -- but just 17 minutes later, Arsenal would find themselves trailing.

Carroll started the comeback when he latched onto a sumptuous Aaron Cresswell cross, before being allowed too much space in the Arsenal box and firing an unstoppable acrobatic volley into the back of the net just before halftime.

After the break Carroll picked up where he left off, again finding himself with ample room at the back post to steer a powerful header past Gunners keeper David Ospina.

Arsenal continued to threaten though, and would eventually equalise through defender Laurent Koscielny, who hooked in an uncontested shot from close range after some lovely one-touch football.

However that was the way it remained, Andy Carroll earning the plaudits and, as it turned out, hoping that his performance would be enough to earn him an unlikely England call-up.

When asked whether that was something he was pushing for, Carroll replied: "Without a doubt".

"You have to keep that in the back of your head, but I have to play each game here and see how it goes," he said.

The result leaves Arsenal 10 points behind league leaders Leicester with just six games remaining.
