Atletico Madrid are back into the Champions League final on away goals after losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich.

After winning the first leg of the semi-final 1-0, Atletico grabbed a second half away goal that took the tie away from Bayern and ended the German's hopes of reaching an 11th European Cup final.

Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso tied up the semi-final on aggregate when his free-kick took a hefty deflection off the wall and sent Jan Oblak.

The hosts' had the chance to double their lead from the spot, but Thomas Muller's penalty was pushed away by Oblak.

However, out of nothing, Atletico snatched the advantage back with an away goal when Antoine Griezmann beat the offside trap and kept his cool to sweep it past Manuel Neuer.

Robert Lewandowski headed Bayern back in front on the night, but another goal was required to overturn Atletico's lead.

Controversially Atletico had the chance to put the game to bed from the penalty spot when Fernando Torres was tripped.

Replays showed the Spaniard went down outside the penalty area, but justice was served when his penalty was saved.

Atletico were beaten two years ago in the final by Real Madrid, who they could end up meeting again.

Real Madrid host Manchester City (0-0) in the second semi-final on Thursday (NZT).
