The New Zealand women's sevens team have laid down a marker to Olympic champions Australia, with a 17-5 win in the final of the world series tournament in Dubai and gain a modicum of revenge for the final loss in Rio.

The Black Ferns never trailed and had the match sealed early in the second-half when Rebekah Cordero-Tufuga gave the Kiwis a 17-0 lead.

Earlier, the flying Portia Woodman had given New Zealand an early lead with a length of the field effort.

Kelly Brazier was named Player of the Final.

The victory was especially sweet for new coach Allan Bunting,

"We're pretty stoked with that win," he said.

"It's been a while since we got a win over Australia and i'm sure they'll go away and come back a lot stronger as a result of that match.

"We always go out to win but we're still learning a lot. Most importantly the girls went out and played with heart."
