Novak Djokovic has beaten Roger Federer 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to win the US Open and grab his third Grand Slam title of the year.

The US Open men's final was delayed by rain for more than three hours, but Djokovic wasted no time breaking Federer's serve at the second time of asking.

Djokovic's smooth start would hit a blimp, as the world No.1 slipped over while attempting to reach a shot.

The fall drew blood from the Serbian's forearm, and it took him a few games to recover as Federer broke back and held his serve to love.

After a bit of medical attention, Djokovic was back to his best, getting the break and winning the first set 6-4.

Federer battled back in the second set taking it 7-5, but it would be all Djokovic from that point as he steamed forward.

With the momentum wrestled back, Federer looked like he was running on empty as his usually reliant backhand went long twice to first be broken, and then to give the third set to Djokovic 6-4.

Djokovic continued to wear Federer down, winning the fourth set 6-4.
