The Oklahoma City Thunder have stunned the record-breaking Golden State Warriors yet again, claiming a comprehensive 118-94 win to take a daunting 3-1 series lead in the NBA Western Conference Finals.

The formula remained similar to that of the Thunder's game three rout - the size, length and athleticism too much for the 'small ball' Warriors to overcome, the hosts wrecking havoc at the rim and dominating the rebound battle.

The win leaves the Thunder just one victory short of a return trip to the NBA Finals, their last appearance coming back in 2012 when they fell 4-1 to the LeBron James-lead Miami Heat, while the defending champion Warriors teeter on the brink of a history-making 73-win regular season ultimately amounting to little more than a hollow record.

Steven Adams was in the thick of the action early, taking a hard-foul to his heavily-taped injured thumb from nemesis Draymond Green which clearly left him in some pain, minutes later falling awkwardly on his ankle after contesting a shot before leaving the game momentarily.

Team-mate Russell Westbrook pushed the pace from the outset, the Thunder defense transforming turnovers into relentless transition offense as they stormed to as much as a 14 point lead, an 11-2 run from the Warriors closing the scoreline to 30-26 at the end of the period.

The second quarter was a more closely-fought affair, the Warriors falling into foul trouble early and the Thunder able to cash in by getting to the stripe with regularity.

Warriors lynchpin Steph Curry and the underfire Draymond Green struggled to find any rhythm as the turnovers came thick and fast, the Thunder riding a Westbrook onslaught and some trademark Adams hustle plays to a 19 point advantage at halftime.

Klay Thompson lead a revival for the Warriors in the third quarter, pouring in 19 straight points to slash the deficit to six points.

But the two-headed monster of Westbrook and Durant, combined with impressive contributions from defensive terrors Andre Roberson and Serge Ibaka, ensured the hosts closed out the contest in convincing fashion.

Westbrook finished with a triple double of 36 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists, with Durant notching 26 points and 11 rebounds, and a typically hard-nosed 11 points and seven rounds for Adams.

Thompson was the pick of the Thunder with 26 points, Steph Curry limping to 19 points on just 6-20 shooting while controversial forward Green posted just six points to go along with six turnovers.

Game five is back in Oakland on Friday (NZT) when the Thunder will have an opportunity to advance to the NBA Finals with a win.

Only nine teams in NBA playoffs history have come back from a 3-1 deficit to win a best-of-seven series, and the last team to do so in a Conference Finals was 35 years ago when the 1981 Boston Celtics trumped the Philadelphia 76ers.
