A stunning first half hat-trick from Blake Powell has seen the Wellington Phoenix upset the second-placed Western Sydney Wanderers 5-2 in Parramatta.

The visitors were on the board after just four minutes, striker Blake Powell executing a textbook diving header to put away a pinpoint cross from Tom Doyle.

Powell was back in the action in the 20th minute, latching on to another Doyle cross at the top of the box and turning to hammer one into the top left corner.

The Phoenix weren't done there, Matthew Ridenton sailing a perfect long ball for Powell to latch on to and chip the goalkeeper with the most delicate of touches and complete the first hat-trick of the A-League season and only the second in Phoenix history.

The second half wasn't safe from the striker's influence either, Powell making it four with a deft header from an exquisite Michael McGlinchey cross in the 71st minute.

The Wanderers eventually managed to break their duck in the 75th minute, Mitch Nichols blasting an unstoppable shot from long range into the top right corner of the goal, before Mark bridge grabbed another one back minutes later.

McGlinchey sealed the win in the 90th minute with a penalty, rounding out one of the better Phoenix performances of the season.
