Three tries in the opening quarter have helped Waikato defend the Ranfurly Shield against North Harbour, with a 26-15 victory in Hamilton.

Waikato captain Isaac Boss scored the game's opening try after 38 seconds, by placing the ball on the goal post.

Waikato crossed again three minutes later, after Loni Uhila snuck over the line.

The Mooloos then continued their dominate start as Nathaniel Apa scored out wide.

North Harbour then started to claw their way back into the game, building possession and territory, which eventually led to their first try as Michael Little stepped his way through the Waikato defence.

However, Waikato led 19-10 at the break.

North Harbour opened the scoring in the second half when winger Afa Faatau made an intercept and found Bryn Hall in support, who crossed for the try.

North Harbour continued to apply pressure and attack the Waikato line, but errors prevented them from taking the lead.

Momentum eventually swung back towards Waikato when Epalahame Faiva pushed his way over the line for Waikato's fourth try.

Waikato will defend the Log O' Wood next week against Manawatu, who are unbeaten so far this season.
