Kiwi sprinter Liam Malone took time out from his 400m T44 celebrations to console American sprinter Hunter Woodhall.

Malone won gold in a Paralympic record time of 46.20sec ahead of Germany's David Behre and Woodhall.

The American looked visibly exhausted after the race and Malone was quick to put an arm around his fellow competitor and share a few words.

Malone edged Woodhall for gold in the 200m earlier in Rio.

Woodhall, 17, was the youngest competitor in the T44 class.

Malone's medal takes New Zealand's haul for the Games to 18 - nine gold, five silver and four bronze - and they are now eighth on the medal table.
