Marseille have pipped Toulon 36-35 in a bizarre match of half football and half rugby.

A local charity organised the match in a bid to see which sport was best.

Two of France’s powerhouse sides went head to head, with Marseille defending football, and Toulon representing the oval ball code.

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona refereed the clash, which saw the sides play a first half of football, followed by a second spell of rugby.

Goalkeeper Steve Mandanda scored two goals early on – playing in midfield – but Toulon hit back to take a 3-2 early lead.

Marseille rallied, and took a 5-4 lead into half time, when the shin guards were replaced with mouth guards.

Toulon dominated the second half as expected, but Marseille showed they were could foot it, with striker Andre-Pierre Gignac scoring a crucial try.

Someone clearly forgot to tell new striker Dimitri Payet that conversions have to go over the posts, as he missed a string of kicks.

Marseille physio Christophe Manouvrier dotted down late to secure a 31-31 draw, which, coupled with the football result, saw Marseille take the game 36-35.
