Michael Phelps has taken his gold medal tally to 21 after helping the United States to victory in the 200m freestyle relay and reclaiming his 200m butterfly crown.

In his first final of the night Phelps made it look effortless as he clocked a time of 1.56.36 in the 200m butterfly.

Phelps, 31, exulted after swimming to victory, raising one finger in the end as he soaked in winning his 24th total Olympic medal.

The American swimmer edged Japan's Masato Sakai by four-hundredths of a second to take back the 200m butterfly crown he lost four years ago to South Africa's Chad le Clos in London.

Hungary's Tamas Kenderesi took home the bronze ahead of le Clos, who ran out of steam and finished fourth.

Four years ago le Clos handed Phelps his first loss at a major international meet by edging him in the butterfly final.

Phelps responded by letting the crowd do the talking for him after second gold medal in Rio, waving his hands to orchestrate those in attendance as he hoped out of the pool.

No more than 20 minutes after receiving his medal and holding back the emotion, Phelps was back in the pool with the men's freestyle relay team.

Phelps anchored the team's winning run ahead of Great Britain in second and Japan in third.

This win was Phelps' ninth Olympic relay gold.
