NSW captain Paul Gallen was placed on report just before halftime in Game 1 of the 2013 State of Origin series for sucker punching Queensland player Nate Myles.
Gallen landed two clean blows before teammates rushed in to separate the two.
Audio picked up between the referee and Gallen appeared to reason that Gallen reacted because he felt Myles had been going into tackles and leading with his head.
The Blues won the game 14-6.
