Rookie driver Alexander Rossi won the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 after almost running out of fuel on the last lap.

New Zealand's Scott Dixon has finished eighth after starting in 13th position.

Rossi had to conserve fuel in the final laps, but held on to beat Carlos Munoz and Josef Newgarden as he coasted over the finish line.

The 24-year-old couldn't even make it back to the pits as his car came to a stop and had to be refueled.

It's the first full IndyCar season for Rossi, a former Formula 1 reserve driver.

Defending Indy500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya spun out early in the race.
