Ross Taylor has been dumped as captain of the BlackCaps and will not be available for the team's South Africa tour.

Brendon McCullum will take over as captain in all three forms; Test, One Day and Twenty20.

The Test and Twenty20 squads leave next week for a tour of South Africa. Ross Taylor will not go with them, opting to take a break from the sport, but remains committed to NZ Cricket.

He was given the option to captain just Tests, but turned it down.

Taylor was appointed captain 18 months ago by former coach John Wright and has overseen a series of disappointing performances.

NZ Cricket CEO David White told a media confrence in Auckland this morning the decision is not a reflection of Taylor's standing within the team.

"Ross has not lost the dressing room," he said.

White is confident Taylor will return as a player for the England series.

There have been question marks over Taylor's role since Wright was replaced in June by former Kenya coach Hesson, who enjoyed a long association with Brendon McCullum as coach of Otago.

Taylor received support on Wednesday from long-time friend and New Zealand teammate Jessie Ryder, who has made himself unavailable for the Black Caps while he plays domestic cricket and focuses on personal targets.

"Angers me watching @RossLTaylor getting dumped on. Show him some f***ing support NZC," Ryder tweeted.
