Former world tennis number one Serena Williams says her emotions were in check during last year’s US Open final loss, and makes no apologies for being an “emotional player”.

Williams has arrived in Australia ahead of the Brisbane Invitational tournament this week.

It’s the former Australian Open champion’s first tournament since her loss to Samantha Stosur at Flushing Meadows last September.

Williams says the infamous outburst, where she called the umpire “a hater,” wasn’t as bad as reported.

“I honestly think I was really toned down. I didn’t use any bad language or anything,” Williams says.

“I’m an emotional player, and I’m an extremely emotional person, oh my goodness.”

Williams promises not to change her style in the lead up to this year’s Australian Open.

“I’m always going to be me,” she says.
