Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby is feeling much more at ease after sealing her first win in charge of the side.

It was a comprehensive performance for the fresh-faced Ferns, running away with a 65-39 victory against England in their quad series opener.

"Pleased with the outcome," said Southby.

"There's parts of the game that we can be better at, and that's certainly the work-on for this week."

South Africa will be the side's next opponents on Wednesday, a team unfamiliar to New Zealand, Southby adamant the side needs to concentrate on their own play first and foremost.

"We just need to keep that focus on us and on what we need to do to be better than what we've been.

"That's the challenge we keep going back to."

Wing attack Grace Rasmussen was unable to take part in the clash with England after succumbing to illness, rather than the calf injury which plagued her during the ANZ Championship.

"Leading into our first Test match we had a lot of combination work to do which was quite heavy on the legs," noted Rasmussen.

"I'm good to go now," she assured.
