Video: Sir John Walker on Rio Olympics, athletics, and Russian doping

It's 40 years to the day since Sir John Walker raced to gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

The former middle distance runner sits down with Newshub's Nicky Styris to talk about that race which remains as of New Zealand's proudest Olympic moments, the current state of athletics, and the Kiwis hopes in Rio.

Walker also touches on the Russian Olympic team, disagreeing with Vladamir Putin's views that the medals at the upcoming Olympics will be devalued without Russia competing.

"I'd like to think that's wrong, the medals would be tainted if the Russians were there, because there's been so many of them that have been positive," said Walker.

"They've been doing it for years and they've got away with it, so from that point of view I don't they'll be missed at all."

He added that athletics should look to ban doping cheaters from the sport for life.

Walker will be one of many 1976 Olympians gathering for the Honda Power of Dreams breakfast at the Aotea Centre on August 16th.
