The most thrilling moment of the second Supercar race in Townsville was James Courtney's spectacular run to claim second.

But while the Holden Racing Team driver was reaping the rewards of a late change to soft rubber, which eventually saw him pass Mark Winterbottom right on the line. It was Shane van Gisbergen's victory which required him to nurse tyres which were several laps past their best which stands out.

The Kiwi is one of the most naturally gifted drivers on the planet, although I'll stop short of deeming him mechanically sympathetic. Not that that is a bad thing, because his crowd-pleasing-tyre-shredding victory lap turned into a fireworks display as his already worn rear Dunlop tyres were stripped to the steel belts showering sparks behind the Red Bull Racing Commodore.

Van Gisbergen's third win of the season moves him to within 53 points of his team mate and series leader Jamie Whincup, who finished fourth following his win in the Saturday race.

The next stop in the championship is the Ipswich SuperSprint on 22-24 July.
