There have been no upsets, but both of this year's French Open champions have been made to work in their opening round matches at the US Open.

In the women's draw, Garbine Muguruza had to come from a set down to advance, while it wasn't all plain sailing for men's top seed Novak Djokovic either.

It was all typical glitz and glamour to open up the US Open, Phil Collins doing his best to fire up the crowd as part of the opening ceremony.

If world number 247 Jerzy Janowicz had been waiting all his life for this moment he made sure it didn't go to waste, winning the second set against top seed Djokovic.

That proved a slight over reaction as Djokovic ultimately won in four sets, and did a bit of singing of his own.

"It was hard to put on a show after Phil Collins," said the Serb. "He is a legend - I can't dance, I can't talk, all I think about is the way I walk."

Fourth seed Rafael Nadal eased through with a straight sets win as he continues to work back from an injury plagued season.

In the women's draw third seed Garbine Muguruza was taken to three sets before advancing.

Second seed Angelique Kerber is also through, failing to drop a game before her opponent retired hurt.
