It was by chance that Dr Andrew Deaner was in the stands at White Hart Lane to assist when Fabrice Muamba collapsed.

The experienced cardiologist ran onto the field when he saw that officials were performing CPR on Muamba in the FA Cup quarter final tie between Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers.

“As soon as I saw them start CPR something sort of twitched in me and I turned to my brother… I should go and help,” he told Sky News.

Deaner persuaded a ground steward to let him onto the field and began work on Muamba.

But had it not been for a spare ticket, he wouldn’t have been there at all.

Before the 41st minute the only thing that Deaner was concerned about was the fact that Bolton were playing “Really well” – very concerning for a big Spurs fan.

But Deaner only gets to go to matches when he’s not busy and freely admits it was by chance it was at the game.

“I just ran on,”says Deaner.

He says there wasn’t a lot for him to do as the team on hand were doing “very good CPR”.

Deaner was speaking for the first time since the incident and says that Muamba suffered another “shock in the tunnel” as he was being moved from the pitch.

Mumaba is currently recovering but remains in hospital care.
