Canterbury's Tom Walsh has claimed second place in a world class shot put field at the Diamond League athletics meet in Shanghai.

Walsh was leading early in the competition, but was pushed back to third by the American pair of Joe Kovacs and Kurt Roberts.

The  24 year old delivered with a big hurl of 21.20 metres with his last throw of the night, to relegate world champion Kovacs to third place.

Most of his rivals for medals at the Rio Olympics were competing in China, including double Olympic champion Tomas Majewski, who finished fourth.

The World Indoor Champion is in second place in the Diamond League series and will be back in action at the next meet in Eugene, Oregon on May the 27th.
