Alex Jones' Wellington Phoenix future is already in doubt, even before playing a match for the club.

Newshub can reveal the Phoenix do not have FIFA clearance for the loan signing of the Birmingham City striker, and he's looks likely to miss this weekend's clash with Western Sydney, with his future beyond that in doubt.

International transfers require clearance from the world governing body, but it's understood New Zealand Football failed to secure that for the club.

A New Zealand Football spokesperson said that Jones' transfer is still in progress and that NZF have nothing further to add at this point in time.

The Phoenix have appealed to FIFA to overturn the decision and assistant coach Chris Greenacre will front a scheduled media session later this morning.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix have signed Hawke's Bay United striker Hamish Watson as an injury replacement for Fijian Roy Krishna.
