The Wellington Phoenix has named assistant coaches Chris Greenacre and Des Buckingham to fill a shared head coaching role until the end of the season.

Former coach Ernie Merrick became the first casualty of the 2016/17 season after resigning from his role as Wellington Phoenix head coach early Monday.

The resignation came after the Phoenix surrendered 2-0 to Adelaide which saw the team drop to the bottom of the table. The team has also only scored six goals in eight matches.

"Wellington Phoenix have appointed Chris Greenacre and Des Buckingham as joint Interim Head Coaches while the club undergoes a thorough process to fill the role full time, after Ernie Merrick stepped down as Head Coach", the club said on Monday.

Former Sydney FC captain Mark Rudan is rumoured to be in talks with the club to take over from next season.
