Chrome set to overtake Firefox in browser wars

Google's Chrome web browser could overtake Firefox as the second-most used in the world by the end of this year.

The top dog is still Microsoft's Internet Explorer, but some are saying it's only a matter of time before Chrome overtakes that too.

Statcounter says its latest figures show Internet Explorer with 42 percent of the worldwide browser market, less than half its 2004 peak of over 90 percent.

Chrome only launched three years ago and now has 23 percent share.
Firefox then had 25 percent, which rose to peak last year of 32 percent, but in the last year has pulled back to 28 percent.

Chrome's gains in recent months are almost exactly mirrored by Firefox and IE's losses.

"If Google can maintain the momentum, Chrome will match Firefox market share by November," says tech writer Wolfgang Gruener on the Conceivably Tech website.
