Kim Dotcom's new website, me.ga, has been blocked by the central African country of Gabon, which owns the .ga domain.

Gabon said it was suspending the web address to "protect intellectual property rights".

"Gabon cannot serve as a platform or screen for committing acts aimed at violating copyrights, nor be used by unscrupulous people," says the country's Communication Minister Blaise Louembe.

Dotcom announced last month he would be launching his new venture on the anniversary of the January raid which knocked his old site, Megaupload, offline.

He says the new site will be "bigger, better, faster, stronger and safer", and run from servers based outside the US.

Dotcom said on his Twitter account the decision is conflating cloud storage with cyber crime.

"Gabon Minister used time machine to analyze legality of the future Mega. Verdict: Cyber crime! Gets 5$ award from the FBI."

He also said they have an alternative domain to work with.

"This just demonstrates the bad faith witch hunt the US government is on."

At the time of writing, me.ga redirects to a subsection Dotcom's personal site, kim.com/mega, which is effectively a duplicate of what was hosted on me.ga.

Dotcom is currently facing extradition to the United States on a number of charges, including money laundering and piracy. He faces extradition in March.
