Netflix has sent out a reminder to certain NZ customers whose user IDs are circulating on breach lists to check their security and reset their passwords.

"As part of our regular security monitoring, we discovered that credentials that match your Netflix email address and password were included in a release of email addresses and passwords from a breach at another company," an email from company reads.

"While we are unaware of any evidence that your Netflix account has been compromised, we've reset your password as a precautionary measure."

While Netflix doesn't specify where the breach comes from, the notice comes after big breaches from LinkedIn, Tumblr, MySpace and Yahoo, which had 500 million accounts hacked in September.

The company says the reminder is a precaution, since many customers use the same username and password for various websites.

"This is part of our ongoing, proactive efforts to alert members to potential security risks not associated with Netflix," a spokesperson for the company told Newshub.

"There can be a variety of triggers, such as username and password breaches at other companies, phishing schemes and malware attacks."
