Alternatives to animal testing

Pharmaceuticals are tested on animals. Makeup, skincare and hair products are tested on animals.
So should we be surprised that party pills might also be tested on animals?
Under proposed new regulations, manufacturers will need to prove that party pills are safe before they're sold. It may be a requirement under law that their effect on animals is measured first.
But the criteria for animal testing in New Zealand are tough – the benefits of any trial must outweigh the suffering animals will experience.
So what are the alternatives?
