Halloween is often called an American tradition, which it isn't. Its origins are probably Celtic, and may date back as far as a thousand years.
But what's nice about it is that when did some kids you don't know last come and knock on your door?
No one does any more.
Homes are islands now, cut off from their own communities and neighbours and their children are strangers.
And if once a year junior from down the road comes and knocks on your door how can that be a bad thing?
