The Government today released a series of emails, including between ministerial office staff, film studios and Sir Peter Jackson, after the Ombudsman ordered their release following a request under the Official Information Act.

This was a tense industrial relations dispute, and we all know how heated they can get.

The film was made, and it's been a huge commercial success – more than $1 billion at the box office and rising.

But back in 2010, making the film in New Zealand appeared to be in grave doubt. People protested against the Actors Union in the streets, and Warners got concessions from the Government.

But did those protests need to go ahead?
