Embracing parenting a second time around

Imagine yourself preparing to retire in your late 60s, when your world is turned upside down by a new addition to your family.

Not your own child, but your child’s child, coming to live with you because the parents can’t cope.

For an increasing number of grandparents this is the new retirement reality. The prevalence of drugs, alcohol and abuse in this country is public knowledge these days, but what is happening to the many children who are spared from fostering isn’t.

Dan Parker reports on a group of special New Zealanders who are embracing parenting for a second time around.
