The Manawatu Gorge is a remarkable piece of road, and a vital link between Hawkes Bay and the Manawatu.

It’s perched between two relatively unstable cliffs and sits precariously above the rapids of the Manawatu River.

Until recently it's been closed to traffic as workers cleared some 370,000 square metres of dirt and rock. The economy in nearby Woodville took a hammering.

But at a time when more and more people are finding themselves out of work, one business owner is determined not to join the unemployment stats.
