Preparing your home for an earthquake
Tuesday 13 Nov 2012 7:57 p.m.
How prepared would your home be if there was another major earthquake – not just bottled water and canned food, but the structure of the house itself?
In Christchurch, thousands were left homeless in the aftermath of the quakes because their homes had weak piles, unsecure chimneys and no reinforcing.
In Wellington they have much the same problems and a report out today says when the big one hits, thousands of residents could be stranded alone for days.
And as if they didn't already need a wake up call, the council has published a checklist of things you can do to prepare your home as much as possible.
Many of the things on the checklist you can do yourself and it's freely available to everyone online.
