11 injured as sinkhole opens up on Algerian highway

A large sinkhole opened up on a road in the Algerian capital, Algiers, on Friday (local time).

Five cars were reported to have fallen into the hole on the Ben Akoun highway, injuring 11 people.

Six of the injured were taken to hospital, according to state news agency APS.

On Saturday crews worked to repair the collapsed highway, which had reportedly collapsed due to an outdated sewage system beneath the road.

Scenes from the incident show a hole nearly the width of the road, deep enough to swallow a car.
