A man has been arrested after more than 40 horses were found either dead or severely malnourished on a rural property in Melbourne.

The 63-year-old has since been charged with 92 counts of animal cruelty and criminal damage after the horses were discovered on his property in north-west Melbourne suburb Bulla.

Neighbours had originally made the discovery yesterday after complaining of a foul smell coming from the man's home.

Some neighbours reported seeing some of the poorly-fed horses over the Easter weekend.

It's believed the horses were thoroughbreds or former race horses.

22 were found dead and police are now looking to rehome a further 22 malnourished horses.
