The radio DJs at the centre of the royal prank that may have contributed to a woman's death have received death threats.

Nurse and mother-of-two Jacintha Saldanha was duped by 2DayFM DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian when they phoned King Edward VII hospital pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles.

Ms Saldanha took her own life three days later and was found hanged in her room with three handwritten suicide notes.

A letter sent to 2DayFM DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian contained “a number of threats”, a police spokesman told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The nature of the threats is not known, however there are reports one letter warned Christian there were “bullets out there with your name on it”.

The letter, believed to have originated in South Australia, also made reference to a shotgun, according to the newspaper.

Police are understood to be in discussions with the station’s management and anyone with information about the letter is asked to contact police.

A five-minute hearing at Westminster Coroner's Court in London on Thursday morning was told a cause of death for Ms Saldanha is still to be determined but it is not considered suspicious.

Meanwhile Australia’s media watchdog has confirmed it will investigate the radio prank and whether 2DayFM breached its licence conditions or the industry’s code of practice.

If found guilty, the station could lose its right to broadcast or be given a large fine.
