Authorities in Mexico's capital say that a shootout in a poor district has left five young people dead and two wounded.

Mexico City's Attorney General's office says in a statement that the fatalities were two women, ages 14 and 20, and three men with ages ranging from 19 to 22.

The statement said the shootout took place Saturday morning in the working-class district of Iztapalapa. Two injured people are in serious condition.

Authorities did not say if the shootout was linked to drug trafficking, but some parts of Mexico City have seen violence by drug gangs and organized crime, though the capital city is less affected than some other cities. More than 47,500 people have died in violence linked to Mexico's war on drugs nationwide since December 2006
