They had a gruelling 27-hour separation surgery in October that cost more than $2.5 million.

The brother's had the surgery at the Montefiore Hospital in New York, home to some of the world's most highly regarded surgeons.

"This is so hard. I'm not going to sugarcoat it," she said before the operation.

After the surgery, the twins have been recuperating at the hospital where Ms McDonald says she has been experiencing moments she'll cherish forever.

"I looked down at Jadon's angelic face and saw him in a way I'd never seen him before," she said.

"Instead of wrapping my body around him in his bed, I wrapped my arms around him and rocked. One of the most profound moments of my life."
