As Syria's civil war rages on, it's more than just humans being left homeless in the destruction.
In the capital Damascus, a group called the Syrian Team for Animal Rescue has rescued hundreds of cats and dogs caught up in the humanitarian crisis.
Founder Hanadi Al-Muhtasaib says he was rescuing animals before the war began, but began the new shelter as times got tougher.
"After the civil war intensified, we decided to rent this place to gather all the animals," she says.
More than 200 cats and 140 dogs have been adopted by the group since it opened in May - some of whom were given up directly by their owners, others who were injured in the war and became strays.
But space is limited and the group hopes to expand to bigger premises, or for residents to adopt some of the animals.
Volunteer Muhammad Asqoul says the shelter isn't supposed to be a permanent home for the animals.
"This is only a temporary shelter for the injured animals. We hope to help them find comfortable homes," he says.
"As there are more animals that need our help, we hope these pets here could be adopted to make more room for newcomers."
Some of the animals that have come into the shelter were injured by knives or guns, vet Hussein Abo Aljadayal says.
"We have received many animals with various injuries. Some had wounds in the lips and eyes.
"For those that could not fully recover from their wounds, we would amputate them. They were weak, and nervous."
Around 11 million Syrians have fled their country as the war has raged, according to the United Nations.
