A Victorian farmer is in a critical condition after being stuck in machinery for more than a day.

He had been baling hay and became trapped in the baler, suffering extensive injuries to his legs and also suffering a heart attack.

He was trapped for almost 30 hours before a neighbour discovered him.

A delicate rescue operation  by dozens of emergency workers was undertaken on the farm near Geelong on Monday night to free the 67-year-old after the alarm was raised about 6.45pm (local time).

The man was freed after a nearly three-hour rescue operation about 9.30pm.

A hay baler is a piece of machinery used to compress a cut crop into bales for transport and storage.
