A toddler in Australia tested positive for methylamphetamine, or "ice", after allegedly consuming the drug when he discovered his mother's stash.

The mother of the New South Wales 21-month-old will appear in the Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday over the incident, reports News.com.au.

Police say the boy was put to sleep in his mother's bedroom at their home in Koonawarra one night in January while she slept in another room.

The child allegedly consumed the drug in the night after coming across it in the room.

He was taken to Wollongong Hospital after suffering seizures, police say.

Child Abuse Squad detectives later found ice, cannabis and drug paraphernalia at the south coast home.

The woman faces charges of abandoning a child under seven, causing danger of death and various drug charges.

The toddler is in the care of NSW Department of Family and Community Services.
