Australian man Peter Scully could prompt the reintroduction of the death penalty for rapists in the Philippines if he's found guilty of child sex abuse charges.

Scully, 52, is accused of leading an extreme child pornography ring, and filming himself torturing, raping and murdering children.

He allegedly forced children to dig their own graves while they endured sickening abuse - before selling the footage for up to $10,000 per view.

He was arrested in the Philippines, where he was investigated for the alleged rape of an 18-month-old baby girl.

Two more teenage girls were allegedly found naked and chained in an apartment he owned, while the skeleton of another girl, allegedly strangled to death by Scully, was found at one of his addresses.

Scully has been charged with the abuse and rape of eight Filipina girls over three years.

He has pleaded not guilty, and laughed and joked in court.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has called for death by hanging to be reintroduced for rapists.

If Scully is found guilty, his conviction could lead to a law change, and his execution.
