Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has defended Donald Trump's campaign, saying that the Republican nominee's positions are "reasonable enough" during an interview with Sky News Australia.

In defence of Trump's supporters, half of whom Hillary Clinton said belonged in a "basket of deplorables", Mr Abbott said "They are decent people who want to see change inside their country and that's fair enough."

However, Mr Abbott did say that recent revelations about Mr Trump's views on women were "gross beyond belief" and "completely indefensible", and observed that "plenty of people who are otherwise supporters have not defended them."

He also condemned New South Wales MPs for wasting parliamentary time with a recent motion calling Mr Trump a "revolting slug unfit for office".

Mr Abbott says the measure was an "exercise in moral vanity."
