An Australian police officer has been killed after being hit on the head with an axe in Sydney.

Detective Inspector Bryson Anderson was attacked while attending an incident at a semi-rural property in northwest Sydney yesterday afternoon.

Neighbours had called police to complain that a crossbow was being used to fire arrows were being fired into their yard.

The 11 police who attended faced a volley of abuse and were confronted with arrows, other weapons, and angry dogs.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that 45-year-old Detective Anderson, a respected veteran officer, became separated from his fellow officers at some point during the confrontation.

He was then struck on the back of the head with an axe, and later died in hospital.

A 19-year-old man and 42-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione described Detective Anderson as one of the force’s “finest officers”.

“He was an excellent officer and a damn good bloke,” Mr Scipione said.

“Bryson today has given his life in the service of the community of NSW.”
