The former flatmate and chauffeur of the notorious BBC presenter Jimmy Savile has been jailed for 25 years after being found guilty of a series of rapes and sexual assaults of young girls.

A judge in Manchester, northern England, said Ray Teret, a 73-year-old former pirate radio DJ, had "exploited his celebrity" to abuse 11 victims.

He was convicted last week of seven rapes and 11 indecent assaults during the 1960s and 1970s.

"It is clear that you exploited your celebrity status to sexually abuse young girls when they were between 13 and 15 years of age," said judge Jeremy Baker.

"Those who were raped had little or no understanding what was happening to them and felt they could do little to prevent the abuse taking place."

The public gallery erupted into applause as Teret was jailed, with one woman shouting out "monster" as he was led off.

Former DJ and television presenter Savile, who died in 2011, has since been revealed as a prolific child sex abuser who escaped capture throughout his life.

The mountain of historic allegations about Savile sparked a wide-ranging police investigation which has seen celebrities convicted for sex offences dating back decades.
