British police under investigation for abuse cover-up

The UK's largest police force is to be investigated over allegations it covered up child sex abuse offences because they involved police officers and politicians.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said today the claims against the Metropolitan Police are of "high-level corruption of the most serious nature".

The allegations cover a period from the 1970s to 2005, and include accusations the force suppressed evidence or halted investigations.

In 2012 the police began looking into alleged historic cases of politicians and other high-profile involved in child sex abuse. It appears that was has happened is that in looking back at these cases and how they were investigated, police have identified at least 14 cases that were just stopped or hindered, or evidence was suppressed.

Cases against politicians appear to have been dropped for no reason, and in one case an investigation was dropped with the explanation that police officers were too close to prominent people involved in the case.
