A car bomb attack reportedly targeting a police checkpoint in southeast Turkey has killed many people and injured even more.

Plumes of smoke have been seen in Cizre after the bomb, which targeted a police checkpoint around 50m away from a police headquarters.

The building was badly damaged in the blast.

At least eight police officers were killed and 45 people wounded in the powerful blast, the local governorate told the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The Turkish Ministry of Health says two helicopters and 12 ambulances are at the scene, and several wounded people have been rushed to hospital.

Clashes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish militants have devastated the city in recent months.

It's thought this latest attack is yet another carried out by Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants.
