After the Rio Olympics, Japan made it clear it was ready to grab the baton and get ready for the 2020 Games.

However, we don't yet know where the torch will be lit in 2024.

Here's a look at the cities vying to host the Games in eight years' time, and how they're trying to woo support.

Olympic boss Thomas Bach recently spent two days meeting with French athletes and diplomats. Mr Bach shrugged off safety concerns about France, where in the past 20 months terror attacks have killed more than 200 people.

Paris is offering:

Los Angeles hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

It's got has a massive transit system and more than a half a billion US dollars pledged to pay for the Games.

It's promising:

Budapest stepped in after Mexico withdrew. It is a clear underdog, however Olympic reforms calling for more cost-effective and compact games are giving them hope.

Next week, Mr Bach is meeting with Italian officials, who still hope the Rome bid can be revived despite opposition from the city council and its new mayor Virginia Raggi that their bid should be scrapped because the games cost too much.

Ms Raggi may have a point - a recent Oxford study found the average Olympics goes 156 percent over budget.

The International Olympic Committee will choose the 2024 host next September.
