Colourful billionaire wins Queensland seat

Votes for the Australian senate are still being counted after September's election, but one person who has definitely won his seat is colourful billionaire Clive Palmer.

Mr Palmer is one of the richest men in Australia and has been formally declared the winner of his senate seat in Queensland.

He won by 53 votes and celebrated in Miley Cyrus style.

"I can really twerk, I've been twerking all night after winning this seat," he told Channel Seven's Sunrise programme.

He's based in Queensland, and although his new job will see him spend a lot of time in Canberra he won't be doing many overnight stays, preferring to fly in and out on the same day.

"There's no point having a private jet unless you use it," he said.

"You've got to create jobs. The pilots, they've got to be employed, they've got families to support. The difference is, I'll be paying for my jet and you'll be paying for Tony Abbott's jet."

Mr Palmer is worth around $1 billion which he made in mining. He has other business interests too, and thinks big – he has previously said he'd like to build a replica of the Titanic.

He's also building the world's biggest dinosaur park in Queensland.

He assured Australians his business interests won't conflict with his job as a politician.

"I've got more money than you could ever dream of," he said. "What's the conflict of interest?"

His party, the Palmer United Party (PUP), is to the centre right.

It's believed the PUP did well in the election because Australians were so disillusioned with the two main parties. Public opinion on Mr Palmer remains divided.

"I think he's a little erratic," said one person.

"He comes across as a fanatical idiot," said another.

He has already made one friend in the senate, forming an alliance with Ricky Muir of the Motoring Enthusiasts Party.

"I'm just an ordinary Australian and I thought I'd try to bring some balance back into the senate, alongside the Motoring Enthusiasts Party," said Mr Palmer.

Together they could block legislation from federal government and create a headache for Tony Abbott, although crucially for the government he does support scrapping the carbon tax.

The PUP now has two seats in the senate. It looked like they would won a third in Western Australia - the vote was so close a recount was ordered but more than 1300 ballot papers went missing and it is now likely the high court will order a by-election.
